One of the most common questions we get at Itabashi is: what’s the difference between sushi and sashimi? They both involve fresh fish, but they’re quite different dishes. Here’s your complete guide.
What is Sushi?
Sushi refers to dishes made with vinegared rice. The rice is the defining element — not the fish. Nigiri is hand-pressed rice with a slice of fish on top. Maki is rice and fillings rolled in nori seaweed. Temaki is a hand-rolled cone filled with rice and ingredients. Uramaki is an inside-out roll with rice on the outside, like a California roll.
What is Sashimi?
Sashimi is simply sliced raw fish or seafood — served without rice. It’s the purest expression of the ingredient, with nothing to distract from the quality and freshness of the fish. Common sashimi include tuna, salmon, yellowtail and scallop.
Which is Better — Sushi or Sashimi?
Neither is objectively better — it’s a matter of personal preference. If you love carbs and want a more filling meal, sushi is ideal. If you want to appreciate the pure flavour of the finest fish, sashimi is the way to go. At Itabashi, we recommend trying both!
Are They Both Healthy?
Both are excellent choices for health-conscious diners. Sashimi is particularly low in calories and high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Sushi adds complex carbohydrates from the rice, making it a more balanced meal.
